Electrical Training Packages for Candidates Who are New to the Electrical Industry

At Steve Willis Training we have recognised that not all of the Candidates who want to start a new career in the Electrical Industry can afford to spend three years at college gaining an NVQ.  With this in mind, we have developed a package of industry-recognised Courses that will enable you to start working in the Electrical Industry as a qualified Electrical Installer in as short a space of time as possible.

Our ELEC1 Training Package is delivered in just under five weeks and is split into four Units.  Our expert Trainers will ensure that you are confident and happy with each part of the Course before you progress on to the next stage.

The four Units are taught as follows:

ELECa

This Unit has been designed specifically to give Candidates a good grounding in the practical skills required by an Electrician in their day to day activities as a Domestic Electrical Installer.  Course content includes:

  • Health and safety
  • Access equipment
  • Basic tool and hand skills
  • Cables and application
  • Lighting circuits
  • Power circuits (socket outlets etc)
  • Other radial circuits, such as electric showers etc
  • The fuse board

We recommend that Candidates bring (if available) a basic set of hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, tape measure, wire strippers, spirit level) and wear sturdy footwear for this part of the Course.

This Unit is delivered in the first week of the Package and upon completion we will award you an In-house Certificate.  This Unit prepares Candidates for Unit ELECb.

ELECb

This is a practical and theory (classroom based) Unit which covers Domestic Electrical Installation.  Completion of the Unit results in the NICEIC Domestic Installation Scheme Qualification and further details about the Course content can be found here.

We recommend that Candidates provide their own test meter for this Course if possible (approx. £500 + VAT) as Candidates often find it beneficial to learn to use the same meter they will use in the workplace, however we do have a limited number of these available for Candidates to use whilst on the Course.

A number of books are required for this Course:

  • IEE On-site Guide BS 7671:2008 (ISBN 978-086341-854-9, approx. £20)
  • Electrician's Guide to the Building Regulations (Approved Document P, Electrical Safety in Dwellings) (ISBN: 0-9548791-0-4, approx. £20)
  • Electrical Installers’ Guide to the Building Regulations (England and Wales) (ISBN: 978-0-95487-910-5, approx. £20)
  • Approved Document P, available as a free download from the internet
  • HSE HSR25 Memorandum of Guidance on the Electricity at Work Regulations (ISBN: 978-0-71766-228-9, approx. £12) – this book is optional

This Unit is delivered in the second week of the Package, but Candidates must also attend on the Monday of the following week in order to complete the Building Regulations part of the Course.  Candidates who complete this Unit will be awarded the NICEIC Domestic Installers Scheme Qualification.

This Unit prepares Candidates for Unit ELECc.

ELECc

This is a theory (classroom based) Unit which is split into two components:

City & Guilds 2393-10 component – Building Regulations for Part P

If you attend unit ELECb, you MUST attend on this theory day to complete your qualification (there is no additional cost) and you will already have the relevant books.

  • Electricians Guide to the Building Regulations (ISBN: 978-0-86341-862-4, approx. £20)

This is a theory and practical component and as such you should bring sturdy footwear and overalls/change of clothes with you.

You will use the same test meter as unit ELECb as well as some of the books from units ELECb and ELECc.  In addition, you will require one more book:

  • Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing, 5th Edition (ISBN 978-0-86341-857-0, approx. £25)

More information about this component is available here.

2391-10 component – Inspection & Testing

This component is mainly theory with some practical demonstration.  There are no additional books required for this component as you will already have them from previous parts of the Package.

More information about this component is available here.

This Unit is delivered in the fourth and fifth week of the Package.  Candidates who complete this Unit will be awarded the City & Guilds 2392-10 Level 2 Certificate in Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification of Electrical Installations and City & Guilds 2391-10 Level 3 Certificate in Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations.

Assessments for the various qualifications will be done at the end of each Unit – times are agreed with Candidates on attendance of the Course.  The only exception to this is the written examination for the 2391-10, for which the exam date and time are set by City & Guilds.

Books are available to buy from the IET, from electrical suppliers such as City Electrical Factors and Medlock Electrical, from bookshops or from on-line retailers such as Amazon.

If you wish to buy a Test Meter, we have negotiated a special price of £499 + VAT for a range of meters from City Electrical Factors (Worthing: 01903 217888) and Medlock Electrical (Portchester: 02392 377875).
