Refrigerants and F-Gas Regulations

Who is the Course aimed at?

This programme is for EXPERIENCED REFRIGERATION ENGINEERS who install, service and repair refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems and need to renew or extend their scheme categories - it is not suitable for beginners.

Engineers need to be up-to-date with the latest legislation and practice if they work on the installation, commissioning, servicing or repairing of refrigerant equipment.

What does the Course cover?

Candidates can expect the Course to cover the following: health and safety; installation of compressor, condenser, evaporator and/or flow control; adjustment of control devices; pressure switches; oil control; adjustment of superheat on a TEV; checking functionality of filter drier etc.; pressure testing (direct leak and strength) in accordance with BSEN 378 (2008); evacuation and dehydration of systems; charging of refrigerant into systems (both azeotropic and zeotropic); refrigerant recovery; testing of recovery cylinder contents; systems commissioning and log book completion; jointing and testing of pipework (both brazed and mechanical); indirect leak testing of systems; the ozone layer and why we need it; how refrigerants affect the ozone layer and induce global warming; the "Montreal and Kyoto Protocols"; new alternative refrigerants, blends, properties, characteristics, and phase-out dates; pressure enthalpy; vapour compression cycle and states of refrigerants.

The Course also covers legislation to include: the Environmental Protection Act; EC Regulation 842/2006 (F-Gas Regulations); Ozone Depleting Substances Regulations.

As pipework and brazing forms part of the new F-Gas Assessment, delegates who have little or no experience of oxy-acetylene brazing should attend a pipework and brazing course prior to being assessed under this Scheme.

There are four Assessment Categories within the Construction Skills F-Gas Scheme: J11, J12, J13 and J14.  Our Course covers categories J11 and J12 (leakage check, recovery, install, maintain, service - all systems including systems less than 3kg (6kg hermetically sealed)).  Bespoke courses can be arranged for Categories J13 (Recovery of refrigerant systems less than 3kg (6kg hermetically sealed) only) and J14 (Leakage check only).

Why should I attend this Course?

This training scheme has been developed to meet the legal requirement of EC Regulation 842/2006 (commonly known as the F-Gas Regulation).  Successful completion of this qualification will enable you to prove that you are competent to work with refrigerants in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act.

How long does the Course take?

This course is delivered over 3 days.  This is broken down as two days of revision and one day of assessment.

What does it cost and what is included?

The full course fee is £576 plus VAT.  This price is broken down as follows: revision including R1 & R4 Study Notes (R1 at £30 plus VAT, R4 at £21 plus VAT) £251 plus VAT; assessment (including £45 Certification Fee) £325 plus VAT.

What happens after the Course?

Once we have internally verified your paperwork (we have 10 working days after you have completed your Assessment in which to do this, providing we have all your relevant paperwork) we send it off to the certification body to be processed and uploaded to the Gas Safe Register.  This can take up to six weeks.

Once this process is complete, you will receive a certificate and card directly from the certification body.

What does the Assessment involve?

There are two parts to the assessment for this course: a practical assessment to prove competence and a written assessment to provide evidence of a candidate's underpinning knowledge.
