Energy Efficiency

Who is the Course aimed at?

This Course has been developed in order to bring the existing workforce up to date with current requirements of Approved Document L (Building Regulations - England and Wales).

The qualification is open to those who hold one of the following qualifications and/or experience:

  • ACS CEN1 certificate or registration with an appropriate industry registration scheme e.g. Gas Safe Register;
  • At least two years industry experience in the installation of domestic heating and hot water systems;
  • An equivalent to the above

What does the Course cover?

Approved Document L1 is in two parts; Part 1A for new dwellings and Part 1B for existing.  The Course will explain how installers can comply with the requirements of these documents e.g. Zone Control; boiler interlocks; timing control; insulation requirements; pumped primaries etc.

Why should I attend this Course?

To be able to self-certify boiler installations, the Gas Safe Register requires you to hold this qualification or an equivalent.  You will receive practical guidance on how to apply the above controls/measures to new and existing systems.

How long does the Course take?

A day of classroom-based revision in a single group concludes with the multiple-choice written Assessment (paper-based).  The revision starts at 8:30am.

What does it cost and what is included?

The cost of the Course is £150.00 + VAT.  This includes all revision, Assessment and certification fees.  For this Course we require payment in full to confirm a booking.

What happens after the Course?

Provided we have received all of the requested information, and your payment has cleared, you will receive a photo ID card issued by the certification body.  You should allow up to four weeks for this to arrive, and within this time the certification body will also upload your results to the Gas Safe Register.  We can issue temporary certificates if required.

What does the Assessment involve?

To pass this Course, it is necessary to successfully complete one written multiple-choice Assessment.  This takes place in the afternoon after the revision.

During the Assessment you will need to use information contained in the Energy Efficiency Best Practice in Housing material, and it is essential that you familiarise yourself with the contents of the documents in the Energy Efficiency Learning Pack.  Please study these documents before attending and bring them to the revision session (see 'Preparing for the Course' below for information on how to obtain these documents).

How do I book a place?

The easiest and quickest way to book a place on this Course is to telephone the office (Burgess Hill Centre: 01444 870860 or Portsmouth Centre: 02392 190190) and speak to one of our advisers.  They will be able to discuss dates and availability with you and can take payment by debit/credit card to confirm your place.

Alternatively, you can email us for dates and availability or, if we have already sent you a booking form, you can complete and return it with your payment.  It’s important that all bookings are sent to the Burgess Hill centre – details can be found on the Centre Information Sheet/Map.

Please note that all places are sold on a first come, first served basis.  Places can only be confirmed on receipt of payment.  We would advise that you check availability with us before returning your booking form.

What should I do to prepare for the Course?

After you have confirmed your place, we will send you a booking confirmation, timetable, invoice and Application for Assessment form.

  1. Please complete the Application for Assessment form and return it to us with anything else that is requested in the accompanying letter e.g. two recent passport photographs.  A COMPLETED APPLICATION FOR ASSESSMENT MUST BE RETURNED TO SECURE YOUR PLACE.
  2. In order to make the most of your preparation time, you must access the Energy Efficiency Learning Pack, which will help you familiarise yourself with the material you will be using during the Assessment.  You can download the learning pack from http://www.skills4business.org.uk/Energy-Efficiency-for-Domestic-Heating/Employers-&-Heating-Installers/29, this should be printed in colour.  Completion of the learning pack is essential.  Unless you are familiar with the content, experience has shown that statistically you are significantly more likely to pass the exam if you have completed the pre-course learning pack.

What should I bring with me for the Course?

You must bring the following with you for the Course:

  • Energy Efficiency Learning Pack
  • Pen, paper and calculator
  • Two passport size photos (if not already supplied)
