Disinfection & Risk Assessment of Water Systems (including Legionella)

Who is the Course aimed at?

Experienced plumbers and maintenance engineers who are responsible for the physical maintenance and installation of hot and cold water systems.

A stand alone one day Course is also available for building and estate managers who want a better understanding of their legal obligations and the risk assessment process.

What does the Course cover?

The Course covers two modules: Disinfection of Water Systems and Risk Assessment of Water Systems. 

On completion of the Disinfection Course, candidates will be able to: state the main legislative and guidance documents relative to the control of Legionnaire's disease and disinfection; describe the basic properties of water; explain what is meant by Legionnaires' disease and the Legionella bacteria, including the background to the disease, characteristics of the bacterium and how it is transmitted, sources of the bacteria and  how to control the risk of Legionella; practically assess existing installations for potential basic design risks and make recommendations to rectify the problems; carry out the cleaning and disinfection of a cold water system.

On completion of the Risk Assessment Course, candidates will be able to:  state the main legislative and guidance documents relative to the control of Legionnaire's disease and disinfection of water systems; describe the basic properties of water; explain what is meant by the term Legionnaires' disease and Legionella bacteria, including the background to the disease, characteristics of the bacterium and how it is transmitted, sources of the bacteria and how to control the risk of Legionella; explain the basic cold and hot water design principles and risks associated with Legionella; carry out a risk assessment of a cold and hot water system in a building and make recommendation to rectify the problems.

Why should I attend this Course?

Successful completion of this Course will assist delegates in complying with the requirements of the Health & Safety Commission's Approved Code of Practice (ACoP L8).

How long does the Course take?

The Course is delivered over two full days.  Each day is split, with approximately half a day of training and half a day of Assessment.  As preparation for the Course, delegates will receive, and should study, two BPEC training manuals prior to attendance.

What does it cost and what is included?

The fee for the complete Course is £433.00 + VAT.  This includes the BPEC Study Pack/training manuals and all revision, Assessment and certification fees.

What happens after the Course?

Once we have internally verified your paperwork (we have 10 working days after you have completed your Assessment in which to do this - providing we have all your relevant paperwork e.g. Photos & NI Number) we send it off to BPEC to be processed.  This can take up to six weeks.

Once this process is complete, you will receive a certificate directly from BPEC.

What does the Assessment involve?

Assessment includes a multiple choice question paper for both Disinfection & Risk Assessment.  The disinfection day includes a practical activity on a purpose built disinfection rig.

How do I book a place?

The easiest and quickest way to book a place on this Course is to telephone the office (Burgess Hill Centre: 01444 870860 or Portsmouth Centre: 02392 190190) and speak to one of our advisers.  They will be able to discuss dates and availability with you and can take payment by debit/credit card to confirm your place.

Alternatively, you can email us for dates and availability or, if we have already sent you a booking form, you can complete and return it with your payment.  It’s important that all bookings are sent to the Burgess Hill centre – details can be found on the Centre Information Sheet/Map.

Please note that all places are sold on a first come, first served basis.  Places can only be confirmed on receipt of payment.  We would advise that you check availability with us before returning your booking form.

What should I do to prepare for the Course?

After you have confirmed your place, we will send you a booking confirmation, timetable, invoice and Application for Assessment form.  We will also order your study pack from BPEC who then send it directly to your address

  1. Please complete the Application for Assessment form and return it to us with two recent passport photographs.  A COMPLETED APPLICATION FOR ASSESSMENT MUST BE RETURNED TO SECURE YOUR PLACE.
  2. It is important that you read and complete the BPEC study packs prior to the Course.

What should I bring with me for the Course?

You must bring the following with you for the Course:

  • BPEC Study Packs
  • Pen, paper and calculator
  • Two passport size photos (if not already supplied)

Please ensure that you bring in all of the BPEC Study Packs on day one as they include a voucher for each programme, needed to claim your certification.
