At Steve Willis Training Centres, we’re passionate about empowering the next generation to embrace rewarding careers in the trades industry. As part of this mission, we’re thrilled to be rolling out the second year of our taster session at local schools, an initiative that has already received glowing feedback. One of our recent sessions at Springfield School, Portsmouth, was such a success that it inspired a fantastic testimonial.
These taster days are more than just an introduction – they’re an investment in the future of skilled trades, aligning with the urgent need for fresh talent in the construction industry. With over 65,000 open vacancies across trades such as building, plumbing, gas engineering, and electrical work, the demand has never been higher.
What Happens During Our Taster Days?
Our apprenticeship team visits schools across Hampshire, West Sussex, and Mid Sussex to engage students with the exciting possibilities of apprenticeships. Each session starts with a short but impactful 10-15 minute presentation, introducing pupils to the world of trades and the incredible opportunities available in:
- Gas engineering
- Electrical engineering
- Plumbing
With our gas and plumbing apprenticeships offering renewables pathways.
Students learn how an apprenticeship allows them to earn while they earn, gaining hands-on experience with employers and benefiting from our training facilities at our centres in Burgess Hill and Portchester.
The Growing Need for Skilled Tradespeople
Research from metal supplier metals4U (2024) highlights the critical shortage of skilled tradespeople in the UK.
- Builders: 52,113 vacancies
- Electricians: 12,005 vacancies
- Plumbers: 11,928 vacancies
- Gas Engineers: 9,873 vacancies
Addressing this shortage is vital not only for the industry’s growth but also for meeting the UK’s Net Zero Goals.
A Pathway to Success
At Steve Willis Training Centres, we offer apprenticeships designed to equip students with the skills for a sustainable and rewarding career. Highlights of our programmes include:
Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative Apprenticeship

- Future ready training – FREE Heat Pumps course covering the design, installation, and servicing of this essential green technology
Level 3 Plumbing & Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship
- Renewables pathway – training in air source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse systems, solar thermal hot water systems, and environmental technologies
Level 3 Installation & Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship
- Qualify to work in commercial, industrial, and domestic properties
These programmes not only prepare apprentices for immediate success but also make them integral to the UK’s transition to a greener economy.
Tackling the Gender Gap in Trades
It’s no secret that the trades industry has traditionally been male dominated. Currently, only 1.11% of our apprentices are female – a stark contrast to the 98.89% male representation.
We believe diversity strengthens industries, and that’s why our taster days, open days, and career fairs place a strong emphasis on encouraging young women to explore careers in trades. By partnering with local schools, we aim to inspire future female engineers, electricians, and plumbers and show that there’s a place for everyone in the trades.
Join Us in Building the Future
At Steve Willis Training Centres, we’re committed to bridging the skills gap and inspiring the workforce of tomorrow. If you’re a school interested in hosting a taster session or participating in our apprenticeship open days, we’d love to hear from you.
