EHPA Report Reveals Concerning Dip in European Heat Pump Market

Discover the latest insights from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) revealing a 5% decline in heat pump sales across 14 European countries in 2023. Amid policy uncertainties and a widening electricity – gas price gap, stakeholders, including UK Heat Pump Association (HPA), call for swift government action to reverse the trend and ensure a smooth transition to low carbon energy use.

Recent data from the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) highlights a significant downturn in the heat pump market across 14 European Countries, registering a 5% decline in sales in 2023 compared to 2022. This surprising reversal comes at a crucial moment, as the eagerly anticipated Heat Pump Action Plan by the EU faces an unexpected delay from the European Commission, originally scheduled for an early 2024 release.

The delay in the Heat Pump Action Plan, coupled with fluctuating national policy measures, is causing considerable concern amongst investors and consumers alike. The UK Heat Pump Association (HPA) is urging the UK Government to take note of this trend and act promptly.

CEO of the HPA, Charlotte Lee, stated “Whilst the UK saw a small but welcome growth of 4% in heat pump sales in 2023 compared to 2022, the latest statistics from the EHPA illustrate the uncertainty surrounding the sector and must act as a wake-up call for all stakeholders involved in the world’s transition to low carbon energy use.”

“We need clear, consistent, and decisive action from Governments across Europe and in the UK to reverse this overall decline, and as highlighted by the EHPA’s report, one of the biggest influencing factors is the price of electricity relative to gas. The lowest carbon heat must be the lowest cost heat to accelerate the transition to electrification.”
