Top Tips from Your Heating Engineer!

According to a recent survey conducted by the consumer group Which? It was discovered that almost 46% of households in the UK refrained from using their heating during cold weather last winter. Additionally, nearly 90% of people surveyed expressed their intention to reduce energy consumption again this year. The survey also revealed that 41% of households are cutting back on oven usage, while 33% are taking fewer baths or shortening their showers to conserve energy.

Here are some top tips:

  • Check the efficiency of your radiators. Release any trapped air through the process of ‘bleeding’ your radiators. You can bleed your radiators using a radiator key, releasing any trapped air and eliminating ‘cold spots’.  Additionally, it is advisable to turn off radiators in unused rooms and move any furniture obstructing the radiator.
  • Ensure your boiler is regularly serviced, this can often be overlooked, but it is crucial to check that it is working properly and prevent expensive, unexpected repairs. Remember to use a Gas Safe registered heating engineer as they must adhere to strict safety and professional standards as they are regulated.
  • It is quite common for us to adjust our heating timers during the summer months, but they are often forgotten when winter arrives. To guarantee that your home is only being heated, when necessary, remember to re-adjust, especially if you are away for work during the daytime.
  • Ensure to monitor the amount of fuel if your household relies on oil heating. It is advisable to avoid waiting until the eleventh hour, as this may lead to increased expenses for urgent fuel deliveries. Remember to make your oil purchase well in advance.
  • If you are facing difficulties in meeting your heating requirements, it is crucial to assess whether you are eligible for financial assistance. The Cold Weather Payment initiative operates from the 1st of November until the 31st of March. If you receive specific benefits and the average temperature in your locality has been recorded or predicted to reach 0 degrees C or lower over a continuous period of seven days, you might qualify for a weekly allowance of £25 for each such seven-day stretch of cold weather.
  • Inspect your living space for any draughts. Typically, older residences are considerably vulnerable to draughts, resulting in the loss of heat, wastage of funds, and an overall uncomfortable living environment.
