Rishi Sunak made an important announcement on September 20th 2023, regarding the UK’s ambitious net zero target.
Electric Vehicles
Originally set for 2030, the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles has now been postponed for an additional five years, until 2035. The reason behind this decision is the high cost associated with Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the need for a comprehensive charging infrastructure that spans the entire nation. Additionally, the initial requirement, implemented in January 2024, mandated that 22% of all vehicles sold should be electric, with a further increase to 80% by 2030.
While the current percentage of electric vehicles on the road stands at a mere 6%, it is worth noting that one-third of new cars purchased last year were either electric of hybrid, indicating a growing trend towards sustainable transportation.
There is no better time than the present, to consider enrolling on our City & Guilds Level 3 award in design and installation of vehicle charging.

Heating
Good news for heating engineers as the reign of gas boilers continues for a little longer. Additionally, the prospect of choosing a heat pump has become even more enticing!
The grant offered to households under the boiler upgrade scheme has been enhanced. Currently, it stands at £5,000 for air source heat pumps, while ground source heat pumps can receive £ 6,000. However, this amount will see further increase to £7,500, specifically aimed at assisting households in transitioning from oil or gas boilers.
Gas boilers will be here for a little while longer and choosing a heat pump has become even more attractive.
Steve Willis Training offers two courses for Air Source Heat Pumps. The installation, commissioning, and servicing of air source heat pumps (non-refrigerant system) OFT21-504A and a course in the design of heat pump systems OFT21-504D.
